The Department of Environment & Coastal Resources

Turks & Caicos Islands

The Department of Environment & Coastal Resources is not an NGO or a community group. It is a Government Department entrusted with the mandate to manage all the Islands natural and pristine environment.

• Although we are a Government Department, we do accept financial contributions towards specific projects. I must emphasize that we only accept funds towards named projects. The reason for this would be made clear below.
• Many donors have expressed concerns that they do not want to contribute to Government simply because they do not want the donated funds to go into Government's Consolidated Funds.
• To address this concern, the Turks and Caicos Government developed a special fund (by law) called the Conservation Fund. A self-financing revenue system was instituted as an obligation of the Government of the TCI . This system known, as the Conservation Fund receives 1% of the Accommodation Tax and is used specifically to fund the operations of the Protected Areas Division of the Department. Funding from the Conservation Fund is also used to finance the operation of the National Environment Center and the Community Conservation Projects.
• The DECR have also established several project specific accounts for which donors can make donation towards specific projects;

• Invasive Species Management Project

  Invasive species is having serious ecological impacts on the biodiversity of the Turks and Caicos Islands. The National Tree, the Caicos Pine has been infected by a pine scale insect. The DECR in collaboration with the National Trust, Royal Botanical Garden - KEW UK, Environmental Health Department and the Department of Argriculture have just completed a three (3) year study to identify this insect and devise approaches to combat the problem.

  We are currently in the process of sourcing funds from TCIG Consodilated funds, donor funds, and funding from the UK to continue the research and preservation work on this very important species.

• Lionfish Management Project

  Since 2007, the DECR have seen a rapid invasion of the Territories waters by the invasive lionfish species. This species is commonly found in the Pacific Ocean. Through means unknown, this species was tranfered to the Atlantic Ocean and have reproduced rapidly. Within 5 years the species has distributed from Florida to almost every island in the Caribbean. Research have shown that this species does not have any known predators in the Atlantic region. The DECR have embarked on a series of awareness initiatitive aimed at encouraging the General Public to report sighting, and promote the consumption of this fish by humans.

• Coral Reef Restoration and Monitoring

  With Development, comes the unfortunate degradation of the environment. The reefs of the TCI are threathened due to boat grounding, anchor damage, nutrification and other man induced stresses.

  The survival of the reefs are dependent on the DECR ability to monitor the stresses and wherever possible devise strategies to mitigate the impacts on the reef. Given the shortage of the DECR manpower, and as part of this effort, the DECR often invite dive clubs and coral reef experts from around the region to visit the TCI and participate in a yearly coral reef rapid monitoring and assessment excersise.

• Fisheries Monitoring

  The TCI only export industry if fish/ seafood. Over the past two years the DECR have embarked on a research study to identify the nesting beaches of TCI Seaturtles and also to indetify the foraging ranges of TCI turtle. This project has met with much success, with the tagging of a turtle named "Suzie." For the first time ever, it was discovered that TCI turtles often swim as far south as Martinique and return back to TCI in an epic journey in which the Turtle stoped at 7 islands. This project recieved numerous international and national media coverage.
